What's This? A New Blog Post?!?!

I'm becoming frugal in my old age!
It’s official. I am the world’s worst blogger. I blame my lack of posts to being off my once-typical writing routine. I’ve gotten lazy with writing, and that’s not cool. Time for me to fish or cut bait, as they say.

So…it’s 2012. We survived the excess of the holidays, the hustle-bustle of the new year, and the forced romance of Valentine’s Day. Since I last wrote, I’m a year older (yikes!) and still busy with work and life. I’ve also noticed that I am becoming more and more miserly as I age.

My new-found frugality is another reason for my lack of blog posts: I simply haven’t had the desire to spend a ton of money on makeup and skincare products. GASP! I used to not think twice about plopping down $25 for a tube of mascara. Now? I find myself picking a $8 tube at my local Target without feeling like I’m missing something.

My skincare products have been whittled down to a bottle of Olay for Sensitive Skin for the daytime and a $5 jar of Olay Night before bed (when I remember).  I just haven’t invested money (or time!) into hunting down the hottest, newest, most exciting products. I seem to have made a subconscious effort to simplify.

And I’m ok with that.

There are plenty of kick ass beauty products out there that don’t cost a fortune. I’ve always been a big fan of Maybelline for mascara and Revlon for lipstick. And when it comes to a body moisturizer? I love Palmer’s Cocoa Butter more than I probably should.

So how about you? What is your favorite inexpensive beauty or skincare product? Do you feel that you’re depriving yourself of anything if you don’t buy a “prestige” brand product? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Adios, 2011!

Can you believe another year is coming to a close?  The older I get, the faster time flies by.  It's always nice to have a new year come, though...it seems to give us all a chance for reflection.  A new year is also a fresh start, and we could all use those from time to time.
This is where I'll be spending my new year's.  The Washington coast is all dunes and sand...a far cry from Hawaii's turquoise waters.  Sigh.

I am heading out to the beach (the WA coast is NOTHING like the beaches of Hawaii, I am sad to report) to celebrate the new year quietly, with my husband.  I'm skipping any "best of 2011" or "hopes for 2012" posts because, frankly, I just don't have the energy. Instead, I will leave you for the year by wishing you and yours a safe, happy, and healthy 2012!

I'll be back soon.

Ready for the Holidays?

I'm sad to say that I'm back from my trip to Hawaii.  It was so nice to be in the sun and to feel actual warmth in the middle of December.  Coming back to dark, dreary, and December-y Seattle was tough. While I hate having to fly, I love being in new places and was very appreciative of a change of scenery.  Just to make everyone living in a cold place a little crazy, here are couple shots of my vacation.

Since I work in the education business, I am off of work until January.  YAY!  I have plenty of cleaning, cooking, and gift wrapping in my future.  I think that by this time tomorrow, I'll be ready for Christmas.

How about you?  Are you ready for the 25th?  Is there anything you're really wishing for this year?  I'll be back soon...I hope you all have a Merry Christmas.  Oh, and Happy Hanukkah!

Ritual De Lo Habitual

I don't know about the rest of you, but during the week I am generally on auto-pilot...especially when I'm getting ready for work in the morning.  I seem to have developed a morning routine: get out of bed, brush my teeth, shower, layout my makeup, have breakfast, put on my makeup, blow dry my hair, get dressed and go to work.  Thrilling.  It's amazing how many steps it takes to get ready just to go to stupid work.
My makeup "mise en place."  Funny, this is all drugstore stuff!  It's different products every day.
Putting on my makeup--my warpaint!--before work is one of the more important things I do in the morning.  And I like to give it time since it's so important.  Getting all my products out and in place before I actually apply my makeup gives me a sense of peace on my hectic mornings.  That small act of creating a "makeup mise en place" grants me a moment to think about nothing important. It's dumb, but I like the sense of order and calmness I get from laying it all out.

My cat, helping me get ready in the morning.  He's a furry makeup artist!
Also important to my morning ritual is my cat, Hugo.  He sits on the counter every morning as I get ready.  He likes to attack my brow brush and thinks eyeliner is really a cat toy in disguise.  He makes makeup application and hair drying all the more interesting (and at times, he drives me crazy!), but I like the company.

All told, I am out of bed, showered, made up, dressed and fed in about an hour and a half.  I know that sounds like a long time, but I love my long, hot showers.  How long does it take you to get ready?  What's your daily beauty ritual?

I'm Still Here...(or should I say: Stila Here!)

I swear, 2011 has been brutal on my blogging habits.  I am still here, still loving makeup, but I just haven't gotten back into the habit of regular blog posts.

EMBARRASSING.

Anyway...I make no promises, but I am going to try to do my best and post better.  Yes, you've heard that before from me, but hey...life is crazy.

So...before I scamper off again for a few weeks of silence (hopefully not!), I have to ask: What is on your beauty wish list this holiday season?  There are always so many kickass palettes and holiday editions...what do you have your eye on?

Me?  I'm digging this lovely palette from Stila (their Dream in Full Color kit, $39), but I'm on a Stila kick as of late.  (I'm STILL loving In The Light, also worthy of adding to your wish list if you haven't given it a try yet.)

Leave me a comment and let me know what you absolutely, positively have to have (or give!) this holiday season.

Time for Fall Nails!

Fall is finally here. This week started off rainy and blustery, just like any proper autumn Monday should.

Since it’s cooler and wetter out, it’s officially time to make the switch to darker, more edgy nail colors. Since I don’t believe in getting manis at spas, I’m back to my routine of doing my nails at home on Sunday nights while watching TV (in bed…because lazy is what’s called for on Sunday nights).
Sorry for the blurry, not-so-awesome iPhone photo.  And the weird claw pose.  Getting a decent shot is tough.
This week’s nail color is Jitterbug from China Glaze. It’s a nice silvery gray with enough shine and metallic in it to make my nails not look overly Gothy. Not that there’s anything wrong with Gothy. Hell, Goth was my look in High School!

What nail color are you rocking right now? And, do you prefer dark nails, colorful nails, or lighter, more neutral nails? My choice? The darker colors of fall/winter.

This Makeup Junkie Gets Real...

I don't know if it's the time we're living in but everyone I know is going through something. In the last few weeks, I've heard it all from relationships crapping out, to losing out on job opportunities, to not feeling recognized. Through all this negativity I've witnessed my blogger and Twitter friends, some I've only known for less than a year, swoop in to save the day. Some gestures are big and some are small but nonetheless, these gestures have brought much needed positivity to whatever the situation is. I think it's pretty amazing.

I really love being apart of a community that I share and have so much in common with. We go about our days, blogging away, not really grasping what we really are to each other. We can be so focused on numbers, beauty reviews, and events that sometimes we forget to take time getting to know the person behind the blog or brand. When we think of the perks of being a popular blogger, we think of free beauty products and exclusive event invites. But the true perks are connecting with other people on-line and in person.

I've always been a pretty positive person and not just because my name is Joy. Like everyone, I've gone through a lot of struggles so to get through life being positive is my only option (plus my son and hubs are so darn hilarious it's hard to stay sad). I always try to help or promote people wherever I can and even when it bites me in the butt, I try not to get jaded. Some may take my niceness as naivety or ass-kissing, but it's genuine. That's just who I am and I'm not going to apologize for it (ironic because I always say "sorry" - guess that's just the Canadian in me eh?). I've had those moments - and I'm sure you have too - when I feel like I've given all I can (especially if you're a parent!) and I just want to say "screw them!". Then it just starts to eat at me, because if you can help someone why wouldn't you? I'm not saying to not be cautious because there are some people that just want to use and abuse you. But if you really want to come out on top, be honest. The same goes for helping others - don't do it to get something in return.

Anyways, I'm going off on a tangent now! With so many social media platforms like Twitter & Facebook, trying to make it as a makeup artist or blogger (or whatever your career is) is a hustle and highly competitive. If you're a new blogger or makeup artist, don't let the growing numbers of either industry scare you off or keep you down. If you are a talented makeup artist and work hard at your craft, you will get noticed and succeed! The same goes for bloggers - try not to worry about numbers or let jealousy take over you (that goes for personal life too). Keep doing what you're doing and the opportunities will come. Write what you're passionate about and do it because you really love it - not because you want free products, to be famous, or go to cool events. What's great about the blogosphere is that each blog(ger) is unique and translates to each person in a different way. You can't win 'em all and not everyone will like you but that's life. The internet universe is pretty roomy so there's lots of space!

What compelled me to write such a long, sometimes cheesy, maybe overly dramatic post (hey- I can say whatever I want. It's my blog! lol)? When I needed to vent, a few special peeps (you guys know who you are!) brightened my day. A comment that almost brought me to tears (or I'm pms'ing majorly) was when one mentioned that I helped her out this week and she wanted to return the love! My gesture was small I thought, but I never realized how much it meant to her. It's that moment I realized why helping others is worth it! You just never know when you'll change someone's life big or small, so don't forget to check in once in a while and show some love to your fellow bloggers, friends, and family (even when he/she doesn't deserve it! lol). And remember, rise above all the negativity and be the bigger person! And more great advice I got from another special peep - use the negativity as fuel to get where you want in life because that is the best revenge!

At the end of the day, it's not our jobs or our blogs that define who we are. It's how we do it. And I'm done. Thanks for listening! xo
