Spring Beauty Review 2012: Get A Heavenly Glow With Benefit!

What can I say except that I'm a sucker for packaging. Luckily, the functionality and packaging of Benefit products are usually on par. Spring is when my skin starts to look its best again. It's fresher and more luminous looking and mostly thanks to beauty brands launching products around the same time that give you the perfect natural "glow".

Benefit Sun Beam ($30 CAD): Looking sun-kissed makes everyone look healthier don't you think? I love a lot of Benefit's liquid highlighters and stains and Sunbeam is right up there with the rest of them. This golden highlighter gives you a perfect sun-kissed look especially when mixed with your favourite bronzer. Dab it on the high planes of the cheeks, brow bone, and down the nose for a truly glow-y look. If you're normally oily, just dab in one or 2 areas max. Darker-skinned beauties might prefer this golden highlighter more than something pearly or champagne.

Benefit Hervana ($36 CAD): Do you believe in karma? I truly believe what comes around goes around! Put your halo on and get a heavenly flush with Benefit Hervana. The box includes 4 shades - lucky shell, divine peach, heavenly rose, and berry delight - that you swirl together for a perfect orchidblossom flush. On me, the combined hues give me a more soft berry-pink flush which I love. My swatch photo doesn't do it justice. I think berry and plumy shades are universally flattering and give your skin a healthy pop of colour. The overall finish has a subtle sheen, but not an overpowering shimmer which is nice. And can I say, I am loving the flip box packaging it comes in with mirror over the older boxes. It's a bit more kit friendly and not as bulky. The design of the box powders are fun to collect if you love cute packaging. I own almost all of Benefit's box powders. A definite must-have for Spring for me!

Benefit Hervana blended to not blended swatch.

What are your favourite products that give that "heavenly glow"?

Both products are available at Sephora locations and Sephora.com.

  2. Bite Beauty Luminous Creme Lipstick Set of 5 ($25 USD): I'm becoming quite a fan of Canadian brand, Bite Beauty! This good-enough-to-eat (yes that's right) line of lip products is highly pigmented using food-grade colouring that is approved and used in yogurts and other foods. For all you wine lushes, each lipstick contains 5 glasses of Resveratrol, a super anti-oxidant that fights free radicals and repairs your lips overtime. The set includes mini lipsticks in Shiraz (soft plum), Fig (nude rose - personal fave), Pepper (dusty rose), Bouquet (soft pink), and Champagne (pearly nude - great for using as a highlight in the center of lips). It's free of all the yucky stuff so let your lips lick, taste and maybe even bite! Perfect for the lip junkie(s) in your life who love all things natural. Available at Sephora.

3.  Bobbi Brown Classic To Go Palette ($25 USD): A lovely stocking stuffer for the "sophisticate" always on-the-go. This classic palette will take you from day to night in seconds! This mini palette includes 3 shadows in Bone (off white), Cement (grey beige), and Caviar (Blackest Brown), Mini Naked Plum High Shimmer Gloss (rosy brown with shimmer), Pale Mauve Lip Color (light pinky mauve), and Tulle Lip Color (soft pink). Save this for your fair to medium skin beauties - Bone, Cement, and Tulle barely show on me, but the plum gloss is gorgeous and Caviar is one of my go-to dark shades for lining the eyes or creating a smokey eye. Available at Holt Renfrew across Canada.

4. Benefit The Big 10 ($32 USD): New to the brand? This is a great way to sample the line. Already a fan? You'll love these travel-size minis of their best-selling products plus some new ones! Having your best gal pals over and want to do something special? This set is perfect for gifting a few stocking stuffers. The set includes Dandelion (one of my favourite pink blushes and all-over face for brightening back in the day), Erase Paste in Medium (a MJ fave), Benetint, Posietint (MJ fave), High Beam, Ooh La Lift, Stay Don't Stray, That Gal, The Porefessional (MJ fave), and Bella Bamba (new box powder a new fave).  Available at Sephora.

What will you be filling your stockings with?

Fall Beauty Review 2011: Amp Up Your Glow With Benefit Watt's Up!

What defines a "glow"? I'll tell you what doesn't. If what you're using looks gritty on your skin, isn't blended well, or makes you look like a disco ball then you need to ditch it. I have highlighters in all kinds of forms: powders, loose powders, creams, gels, lotions, liquids, and even gooey jellies (which I only used in fashion photography). When there is one that really works and photographs well, I stick to it. My beloved M.A.C. Mineralize Skinfinish in Shimpagne used to be my go-to highlighter. It really is a beautiful highlighter, but at times it could sit really heavy on the skin if I didn't use a light hand or the right brush.Well, I think I've found a new love!

Benefit's Watt's Up! ($30 USD) has become my new favourite product for creating that luminous finish. It's a gorgeous champagne soft focus highlighter that gives your skin a really natural glow. It has a lovely cream-to-powder texture that melts into the skin. The powder finish gives it a lasting finish. I was still "lit" until I was ready to take off my makeup in the evening. I love applying it during the day to make me look fresh and awake and it also works great when contouring. The champagne shade has a warm undertone to it and will suit most skin tones, although I've only tried it on my skin tone and lighter. I imagine it would still work for darker skin tones but it would be great if they came out with another shade that has more peach and gold in it.

At times Benefit's packaging can be gimmicky, but I've always been a fan of their kitschy design. Watt's Up!'s design and packaging are not only eye catching but functional. I love the idea of having the stick highlighter on one side and a blending sponge on the other. No messy fingers! Although, while the sponge helps blend the highlighter beautifully, the warmth from your finger will make it blend into the skin better.

All in all, it may be pricey for a highlighter but it's right up there with other luxury brands. The added benefit of the sponge definitely makes it worth it plus the natural glow it gives. You can also use it on several areas. You can apply it on the brow bone, inner corner of eyes, on your lips to make them look poutier and to accent your decolletage. If you're in the market for a highlighter, this is one to definitely add to your list!

Have you tried Watt's Up!? Love it? Hate it? Want it?

I Heart You. Which One Are You? Flirty? Girly? Or Seductive?

Valentine's Day is fast approaching! How many of you really celebrate V-Day? For me, the only thing I love about it is the heart-shaped chocolates! My husband and I don't go all out like we used to now that we're married - not to say that we don't have any romance - but we don't need one day to show how much we love each other because we show each other everyday. Go ahead and gag but we really do! I do, however, love to make it fun for my son. So, it will be heart-shaped cookies and cupcakes for him (who am I kidding - and for me too!).

If you still love wooing your special someone or looking to lock hearts, you'll need to decide if you want to look flirty, girly or seductive (or all 3)!

Flirty Girl

A flutter of the lashes can get any guy all hot and bothered! However, you might not get the same reaction if your lashes are close to non-existent. Give your lashes a boost with some flirty falsies. Right now, I am loving Ardell's #110 Demi Black lashes. They are similar to my go-to Quo #803's. I think feathery looking lashes are super sexy and flirty and also really natural looking. The separated style also makes it ideal for creating a customized look. Cut in half and just add to the corners for a Marilyn-esque vibe. The separation of the lashes also allow your individual lashes to mix in with the fake lashes.

For a step-by-step on how to apply lashes check out a past post here

Girly Girl:

Nothing makes a gal look more girly than a youthful pink flush on the cheeks. I really love Kristen Bell's pink cheeks in this photo. It just looks so fresh and pretty.

Benefit Posietint swatch

I love to layer liquid and cream blushes underneath a powder blush. Your blush lasts longer and pumps up a sheer blush. Benefit Posietint is lovely pink liquid blush that gives a sheer girly flush. On my skin tone, I have to apply a few layers for it to show, but I love the soft pink glow it leaves on my cheeks. If you're going to be doing a little smoochin', it also doubles as a lip tint so kiss away!

Benefit Posietint and Stila Custom Color Blush on top

When I want the colour to be stronger, I love to layer Stila's Custom Color Blush on top of Posietint. Stila claims that this blush is a one-colour-suits-all by customizing the perfect shade of pink based on your skin's pH. I was skeptical but at IMATS Toronto the bright pink caught my eye and had to have it. I've only tried it on my skin tone so I don't know if it really creates the perfect pink on everyone but I love the shade of pink it makes on me! Word of caution: the blush is highly pigmented so start with a light application and wait a few minutes before applying another layer. I found that it would go brighter after adjusting to my skin.

Seductive Girl:

With red, pouty lips like these it'll be hard for him to focus on anything else. When I wear a red lip, I instantly feel more confident and sexy. If you've never worn a red lip before, but are contemplating taking the plunge this V-Day you might want to work your way up to full bold lip.

mark. Gloss Gorgeous Lip Stain in Lolli

My lips are typically on the drier side and most long-lasting lip colours can be a bit drying. I adore mark. by Avon Gloss Gorgeous Lip Stains because it brings the best of both worlds together: lip stain and gloss! Can't get any more perfect than that! These fabulous lip pens apply sheer at first but layer a few more swipes and you get full-colour glossy goodness! Lolli is a juicy red that works for all skin tones. After the shine wears off, you'll still have a beautiful stain left on your lips. What's even more to love? The $10 price tag! I snatched up all 4 shades and love 'em!

Sephora Cream Lip Stain in Always Red

This one is for all you gals who love to get a rise out of people. Sephora's Cream Lip Stains are serrrrrious! Full, bold, rich colour that won't budge. Always Red is a beautiful matte true red. I definitely recommend lining the lips first and applying the cream stain with a lip brush for precise application. The wand can get a little messy - clown lips are not pretty. Dab excess colour off with a tissue and your colour will not kiss off all night.

Combine the red lips, pink girly cheeks, and flirty lashes for true glamour this V-Day or go for some hot come-hither smokey eyes! Happy Valentine's Day!

Fall Must-Have: Little Black Liquid Liner

Love this look! Louis Vuitton 2007

Liquid liner has been lingering for a few seasons and this Fall is no different. From plum, to navy, to classic black liquid liner is the way to make a beauty statement. Just like an LBD, liquid liner can be worn so many ways. Wing it out, keep it subtle, or make it dramatic with a sexy kitty-cat eye.

Liquid liner is one of those beauty products most women shy away from. I get it - liquid liner can be intimidating and not the easiest beauty product to use. As a beauty expert, I think every woman should own a LBLL. All it takes to go from girl-next-door to drop-dead-glamourous is all in the swipe of a line. But not all LBLL's are created equal. I tested out 3 that are hot on the market - see which one came out on top!

1. L'Oreal Paris Telescopic Explosion Waterproof Eyeliner ($9 + CDN): This liner has a lot of good and a lot of bad going for it.

The good: The slanted felt-tip brush allows for ease of application. I found it really easy to achieve a thin or thick line. It didn't smear or smudge on me and is the cheaper of the 3 liners.

The bad: When you first apply, the formula is way too runny and wet. Even after shaking the bottle, it was still too runny. At the same time, the liner also dried fairly quickly causing a lot of gaps and making it difficult to work the line across the eye. I found this especially annoying when using on my clients. Even though it was smear-proof, I found if you rubbed your eye it would rub off. I believe this has to do with the shiny plastic-like finish. Taking off the liner was a mess because it came off much like a tube mascara.

2. Hourglass Calligraphy Liquid Liner ($32 USD): There's a lot that I love about this liner!

The good: The packaging is chic and shaped like a marker. My grip was comfortable and the felt-tip liner made it really easy to line the eye and wing out. The brush is more on the firm side but that's usually how I like it. Less chance of making a mistake - at least for me that is. The moisturizing formula dries much like a marker does and really "hugs" the lash line. I also love the matte finish. I wore it while working a 17 hour day on-set and it didn't smear or move all day. Bonus: it's formulated without Sulfates, Synthetics, Phthlates!

The bad: The price! $32 USD is a lot of money to spend on a liner when there are cheaper ones that are better or comparable. Once this runs out, I'm not sure I'll be dishing out money to purchase it!

3. Benefit Magic Ink Liquid Liner ($20 USD): I have to admit, I had low expectations for this liner. My experience with Benefit mascaras and the waterproof pencil liner have been a smeary-mess. I've also never been a fan of liquid liners with a thin brush, but the results left me pleasantly surprised!

The good: You want jet-black? Then look no further. The black is really black. The finish is the perfect balance between shiny and matte and it has some serious staying-power. It does not budge at all! Don't be fooled by this tiny little brush. I thought it would be flimsy but it is firm with some flexibility. I can get really close to the lash line and build the line to my desired thickness without it moving all over the place. It dried pretty quickly but allowed enough time to work it across the lash line. The price is also pretty reasonable and a good compromise between the L'Oreal and Hourglass liners. And as always, it comes with a mini-tutorial on how to line your eyes using the "jimmy-jimmy-dot" method. Say it aloud and make a dot every time you say "dot". Dot for natural looking volume or connect the dots for a sleek line.

The bad: Nothing really but I find with most liners that have a similar brush it's hard not to get the formula on the lashes. My lashes end up sticking together and I have to clean them off right away before applying my mascara to avoid a clumpy mess. Otherwise, I pretty much love it!

Tip: The best way to achieve a smooth line and symmetrical shape is to sweep the brush across using short strokes. I don't know about you but my hand can get shaky so using a short stroke helps. Another great trick is to create a guideline using an angled brush and a black powder shadow. This way you can avoid mistakes and wing out your liner that much easier.

Have you tried these liners? Love 'em? Hate 'em? Want 'em?

Makeup 101: Flirty Plum Eyes With Bride-to-Be Erica!

I love that we're going into the second week of October and bridal season is still going strong! Meet Erica, one of my gorgeous brides-to-be! She's a natural beauty with lovely green eyes and long lushes lashes. I instantly wanted to play up her green eyes so we decided to go with a neutral base and plum accents in the crease. Plum, being one of the big trends for Fall, is a perfect palette for this November bride! (Quick shout-out to Naomi for inspiring me to do this post! Thank you!)

Here are the star products:

Skin
Cargo blu_ray High Definition Mattifier Primer (t-zone)
Make Up For Ever HD Primer (rest of face)
Face Atelier Ultra Pro Foundation #2/#3 mixed (all over and under eyes)
YSL Touche Eclat #1 (under eyes)
Make Up For Ever HD Powder
Bailey Cosmetics Foundation Duo in Tan (contour)

Eyes:
CoverFX EyePrep FX
Bobbi Brown Caviar Eye Shadow (brows)
M.A.C. Vanilla and White Frost (brow bone)

the fake lashes were not glued on for the trial which explains why it is falling off the left eye!

1. NARS Rajasthan Duo Eye Shadow ($32 USD):  I love this duo. For this look I only used this metallic almond shade as her lid colour. I also applied this on the lower lash line. Even though we were using plum shades, we still wanted the overall look to be fairly neutral. I have used the metallic almond colour on just about every skin tone and every result is beautiful. I will definitely do another feature using both the shades because the navy-grey is a sexy alternative for a black smokey eye.
2. M.A.C. Sketch Shadow ($17.50) Sketch is an oldie but a goodie! This burgundy-plum shadow with red shimmer is deep and gives the eye a real sultriness to it. I added this shade in the outer crease to middle of the lid and over top of UD 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Crush. This shade was also applied on the lower lash line.
3. Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Crush ($17 USD): I've had a love affair with these eye pencils for a few years. This is actually from last Fall's collection. Crush is a deep plum with teeny silver glitter. I love using cream bases like an eye pencil to bring out the hue of a powder shadow. Plus, it helps enhance the staying power of a powder shadow. Thankfully the glitter does not fall off onto the skin and gives the hint of sparkle appropriate for a grown woman. I also used UD's Zero black liner to line the top lash line. She didn't want a heavy line so I smudged it into her lash line and dipped an angled brush in black shadow to help lock it in.

L'Oreal Black Mascara (bride's own)
4. Quo #803 Lashes Shopper's Drug Mart Brand ($7.99): I adore Quo lashes. I do not love the glue but their line of fake lashes has never disappointed me. There are a variety of styles to choose from and all are made with 100% natural human hair. One of my favourite styles from the line is the #803. The hair is longest at the center and shorter on the sides which makes the eyes really pop. The feathery quality also gives it a flirty quality and looks very natural against her own lashes. Erica already has long lashes but these falsies just enhanced them even more. Tip: I don't always like to add an obvious line with liquid liner to hide the band. Since she doesn't want the liner to look thick, I will use a flat synthetic brush dipped in black liquid liner and smudge it right onto the band of the fake lashes.

Cheeks:
5. Benefit PosieTint Cheek and Lip Stain ($28 USD): Another beauty crush. When it first came out I tried it on in the store and wasn't too impressed. A month ago, one of my bride's asked me to use it on her underneath a powder blush. I fell in love! I finally decided to pick one up and can't get enough of it. I love cheek and lip stains especially since I wear minimal makeup for everyday. I love it on its own or layered underneath a pink or coral-pink blush which is what I did with Erica. It's creamier than the original, Benetint, and gives a true girly flush. On my skin tone, I need about 2 layers on my cheeks and 3 layers on my lips but once it's on it stays on. I applied this first then dusted a translucent powder to set it.

NARS Douceur Blush (dusted over top of PosieTint)
M.A.C. Mineralize Skinfinish in Shimpagne (cheekbones)

Lips:
M.A.C. Dervish Lip Liner (all over)
Beaute Cosmetics Luminous Volume Gloss in Paramour
6. YSL Rouge Volupte Perle Lipstick SPF 15 in Stellar Pink ($34 USD): This bride is a gloss junkie but I think I've made a lipstick convert out of her! Stellar Pink is a soft pink-beige from the Fall collection and is a shade that is "your-lips-but-better". This luxurious, creamy lipstick is packed with pigment but the glossy finish keeps your lips ultra moisturized. It's not a long-lasting lipstick but if you don't mind reapplying you'll love how it just cushions your lips!

What do you think of Erica's bridal look? Have you tried any of these products? Love 'em? Hate 'em? Want 'em?

Most products with the exception of Benetint PosieTint, Quo #803, and M.A.C. Sketch Eye Shadow were sent for editorial consideration.

Fall Trend 2010: Dewy Skin

Glow on girl! Dewy skin is back this season so all you shimmer junkies can rejoice. Back in the day, the word "dewy" was over-used and over-done. Dewiness this time around should be less wet or moist looking (bad choice of words?) and more glowy and radiant.

1. Shu Uemura Stage Performer Instant-Glow ($49 USD): Supermodel skin in a tube? Yes please! Inspired by the models' hectic schedules during fashion week, this beauty cream is designed to revive tired looking skin, enhance the finish of your makeup, and deliver a natural glow. It contains depsea water to improve skin's moisturizing ability and contains ginkgo leaf extract to fight oxidation. I've replaced my day cream with this one and kind of love it too much. Once it settles into the skin, I really notice a rosier glow and a more even skin tone. It definitely delivers instant results.

2. Benefit Girl Meets Pearl ($30 USD): Pearls don't just drape around your neck anymore. Meet Benefit's liquid pearls for your face! This lovely golden-pink highlighter is a light-weight cream used to give your skin that "lit-from-within" glow. Similar to Benefit's That Gal Brightening Primer (love), just twist the bottom and dab a little on where light would naturally hit you. To avoid a disco shine, keep it to the high plains of the cheekbones, inner corner of eyes, and a little down the nose - don't forget to really blend into the skin. You can wear over top of makeup or on bare skin. You'll also love the light sweet scent of raspberry!

Throughout the Fall, I'll be posting photos of me (yikes!) trying out the hottest trends. This is my version of the dewy trend.

Skin:
Shu Uemura Stage Performer Instant Glow
CoverFX BritePrep FX
Benefit Erase Paste
tarte Smooth Operator Tinted Moisturizer
Benefit Girl Meets Pearl (cheekbones, down nose)
CoverFX Setting FX (dusted lightly over t-zone)

Smashbox O-Glow Bronzer (contour)
M.A.C. The Soft Meow Mineralize Blush (Fabulous Felines Collection)

CoverFX EyePrep

Beauty Review: Benefit Cosmetics Crescent Row:The Second Story

Benefit Cosmetics is one of the few brands that make me squeal with delight! If you're a sucker for cute packaging then your beauty stash is probably brimming with Benefit products. The Crescent Row perfume collection is one of a kind and in my books a collector's item. From box to bottle, everything about it is charming. When the box is opened, it's like walking into each "girl's" pretty little world.

Lookin' To Rock Rita: This is one of my favourites out of the new collection. Rita is described as "fruity green - exhilarating and stylish". My senses tend to swoon over deeper, exotic scents. This one is perfect for the summer season. The fruity vanilla scent still smells exotic but lighter and fresher. My mom has become completely smitten with it and has swiped it from me. Guess I will have to buy one - or swipe it back!

Top notes: lemon, coconut, freesia
Middle notes: juicy fig, hyacinth, violet
Bottom notes: sandalwood, brazilian rosewood, vanilla

So Hooked On Carmella: Described as "floral vanilla - exquisitely feminine", Carmella is my other favourite. It isn't pretty feminine - more sultry feminine. This is one scent that will be keeping me warm throughout the colder months. Sorry mom, can't have this one!

Top notes: lemon, grapefruit, rhubarb
Middle notes: cyclamen, peony, tiare flower
Bottom notes: vanilla, sandalwood, amber

Garden of Good and Eva: If you prefer a cleaner, lighter scent then you will love Eva. It is a citrus floral that smells clean and fresh. Although it's not a scent I would buy, the smell is pleasant. I think with my body chemistry, warmer vanilla-based scents smell better on me.

Top notes: pear, watermelon, ozone accords, muguet
Middle notes: rosebud, jasmine petals, green violet leaves, freesia
Bottom notes: sandalwood, musk, cedarwood

I definitely recommend the Crescent Row collection. Not only do they smell divine and look pretty sitting on your vanity, the packaging makes it a perfect gift!

Crescent Row fragrances retail for $36 USD and are available all across North America. Have you tried these lovelies? Love 'em? Hate 'em? Want 'em?

Summer Faves: Face

Summer time fun is no fun when your makeup is melting off your face or looks caked on. Here are a few face savers that have been in heavy rotation in my kit!

1. Make Up For Ever HD Complexion Travel Kit ($34 CDN): If you want to achieve an HD ready face on and off camera this is the kit for you. Set includes 3 best-sellers: HD Elixir, HD Microperfecting Primer, and HD Microfinish Powder.

The Exlir is a gel serum designed to boost the skin's moisture by 520% in 15 minutes. I really love this serum. My skin is pretty sensitive and without a moisturizer feels really tight. I tried the serum without a moisturizer and my skin felt well hydrated. Only a small amount is needed to cover the face.

The HD Microperfecting Primer is fantastic! It has an oil-free formula that glides onto the skin. My skin feels so smooth with the combination of the Elixir and primer. Makeup blended perfectly onto the skin and lasted all day. It has become one of my new favourite primers!

The HD Microfinish Powder is made with 100% mineral Silica powder. I love the soft focus effect it gives your skin. It works for all skin-tones and definitely helps the staying power of the makeup. Overall, it's a great sample kit if you've been wanting to try these products.

2. freshMinerals Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 ($25 USD): Absolutely loving this tinted moisturizer for many reasons. This all-natural mineral tinted moisturizer gives the skin a beautiful healthy glow and protects your skin from the sun. It's tinted but it definitely gives the skin good coverage and it's water-proof. However, if you have a blemish or pimple it won't be enough to cover it. My favourite feature is the twist top foundation brush. I've used similar products and the brush always made a mess. When you squeeze the tube an excess amount doesn't spurt out. You get just enough and the on and off twist top prevents messes and wasting product. There are 5 shades to choose from - I'm Sand and works great from my bronzy skin.

3. Benefit POREfessional ($34 CDN): If you suffer from big pores suffer no more! I am so loving the silky smooth balm that instantly minimizes the appearance of pores and primes the skin. It is oil-free, extremely lightweight, and can be used over and under your makeup. Makeup just glides on effortlessly and keeps your makeup looking flawless all day. It's also great at mattifying the skin. Available July 2010.

4. LUSH Colour Supplement ($13.95 CDN): LUSH has makeup?? This mineral-oil free multi-purpose base can be used in many different ways. This base offers full coverage but if you prefer a lighter coverage mix with your favourite moisturizer for a lighter, dewier finish. It also works amazing as a concealer. Made with red rose petal infusion to calm redness and glycerine to help retain moisture, it gives the skin a beautiful finish. It is available in 4 shades: Light Pink Colour (lightest shade and most versatile), Dark Pink Colour (darkest), Light Yellow (pale or ivory skins), Dark Yellow (olive and yellow skins). The Dark Yellow works great for my skin tone. The only downside is that since it is an all-natural vegan product, the shelf-life of this is about a year and since it comes in a jar you'd have to use a spatula to avoid contamination. And beware, it may melt!

5. Garnier Skin Renew Anti-Dark Circle Roller ($19.99 CDN): I'll be honest, I was prepared to be disappointed by this product. I've tried tinted under-eye products before and all have been a complete fail. I was pleasantly surprised by the coverage and how the mineral pigments instantly brightened my death circles! The cool feel of the roller ball also soothed my puffy tired eyes. The combination of the caffeine gel formula and the roller ball help energize and stimulate circulation. The lemon essence is known for its clarifying properties and brightens the eye area. I was afraid it would alter the colour of my concealer but it didn't. In fact, I ended up using less concealer! The shade is a shimmering beige and is supposed to be a universal shade. It says that it offers "flawless coverage for most skin tones" so it probably is too light for you dark-skinned beauties, however, may work underneath your concealer or foundation. Available August 2010.

6. Cover FX Conceal FX ($27 CDN): The lovely team over at Cover FX held a flash mob outside Toronto's Eaton Center back in April. After the crazy mob of people died down, I luckily went home with a full-size sample of their popular Conceal FX! It erases under eye circles, blemishes, sun damage, redness, tattoos, birth marks, and even moles. I love how opaque yet emollient the concealer is. I've been finding my Benefit Erase Paste is a little too creamy for this humid weather, but Conceal FX doesn't feel heavy and stays put. It is also water-proof and HD friendly. This is a must-have concealer!

7. Skindinavia No More Shine Makeup Finish ($12.50-57 USD): I haven't actually been using this on myself because I don't really have a problem with excess oil. Instead, I've been using it on my brides at bridal trials to see how well this spray actually works. I sprayed this on prior to foundation then once again after all the makeup had been applied. The verdict? There's no question the makeup lasts longer, but my brides did notice the shine creep up after 3 or 4 hours versus the 16 hours that it claims to do. However, the amount of oil and shine that appeared was a lot less and kept the shine at bay a couple more hours longer than without. But even with a bit of oil, the makeup did not smear or melt off. Only touch-ups required was a little blotting. If you have oily skin I'd recommend trying the smallest size before committing to a full size bottle. Overall, my brides were happy with the results!

Have you tried any of these products? Love 'em? Hate 'em? Want 'em? What must-have face products have you been using for the hot weather?

Spring Preview Review: Benefit Flawless Complexion Helpers

I swear, whoever is behind the packaging design over at Benefit knows what makes girly-girl beauty lovers squeal with delight! It's no secret that I absolutely adore the packaging, but what's even better? Their products are actually functional.

Benefit Confessions of a Concealaholic ($44 CDN, available March 2010): The pad-lock diary packaging brings me back to my youth. When I received this kit I seriously squealed like a little girl. My husband turned to me and said, "Like a kid in a candy store". So true. How brilliant is this concealing and brightening kit? You have everything you need to spackle, cover and brighten in here.

Kit includes: travel-size "that gal" brightening face primer, boi-ing concealer in 1 & 2, travel-size erase paste No.2, eye bright, lemon-aid colour correcting eye-lid primer, and 4 concealer/brightner brushes. Inside is a good sized mirror and comes with a complete step-by-step guide for the makeup challenged.

erase paste is my god-send! I never leave home without it. This tub of creamy goodness brightens and conceals all in one. You can read a past review here. boi-ing concealer is a heavy duty cover-up but only comes in 3 shades. I like to use lemon-aid after plucking because it gets rid of the redness. As a primer it works ok but it did crease my shadows a bit. I've used eye bright back in the day but was not a fan because it gave my under eyes a slight grey cast and gave me a rash. That's just on me though. It was my first time trying "that gal" brightening face primer and I'm in love! I loved how radiant the pink primer made my skin look and my makeup stayed fresh all day. Will definitely get a full-sized version when this is done.

Overall, the concept is genius if you have fair to maybe medium-dark skin but if your skin is any darker the shades will look off. Now if Benefit would extend their shades then we're talking!

Benefit STAY Don't Stray stay-put primer for concealers & eyeshadows ($30, available February 2010):  I was really excited when I heard Benefit would be coming out with a primer for eyes and concealer. When I received it, I put it to the test right away.

The Good: The primer is really concentrated and a little goes a long way. It contains vitamins C & E to fight the signs of aging. The primer helped even out and brightened up my eyelids.

The Bad: First, I expected the primer to be clear but it in reality looks like a light beige concealer. I think going clear would have been a better option. I found that it changed the shade of my concealer, therefore, making my under eyes look white. Secondly, I hate the airless pump. Every single time way too much product would dispense. Since it is so concentrated, I'd end up dabbing a tiny bit and wasting the rest. Third, rather than making the skin around my eyes look hydrated, it dried out my skin and enhanced my fine lines. And lastly, my shadow didn't crease but did fade by the end of the day.

I rarely get disappointed with Benefit products but this one was not a winner for me. I'd be interested to hear other reviews! :)

Benefit Bathina "take a picture...it lasts longer..." ($32, available February 2010):  Similar to Bathina "body so fine", this golden-pink velvet body balm makes your skin look luminous. Just brush on wherever you'd like a little sheen and glow. Your skin will feel fabulous from the jojoba seed oil, natural aloe extract, and vitamin E ingredients. Oh, and the velvet puff - love! Pamper yourself by smoothing the balm on with the cushiony-pillow.

Benefit Cosmetis available at Sephora, Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix Beauty Boutiques, Murale, and select Holt Renfrew locations beginning February 2010.

Stay tuned for eye shadow swatches from the Spring collection!

Spring Preview Review: Sweet Cheeks!

Stop, you're makin' me blush! From candy pinks to sweet peaches, you'll want to show off those cheeks this Spring. Don't be coy - blush on with these sweeter than sweet blushes!

Coral Peaches:

Top swatch: not blended, Bottom swatch: blended

Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Cabo Coral (available February 2010):  I am all over this creamy blush - one of my favourites for Spring! Cabo Coral  gives the cheeks a gorgeous healthy glow, perfect for this drab weather or if you suffer from dry skin. This coral-peach shade gives you a beachy pop of colour, a definite perk-me-up shade. I also found it to last into the evening without retouching. The texture works great as a stain if you don't suffer from chapped lips. I liked patting this onto the lips then adding a gloss over top for some depth and moisture.

Tip: To guarantee longer wear on the cheeks, apply after foundation then set with translucent powder.

M.A.C. Blush Ombre in Ripe Peach (Spring Colour Forecast available February 2010):  How gorgeous does this blush look in the compact? I love the gradient colour of coral to light peach - another staple for Spring! The Spring Colour Forecast features for colour stories: coral, pink/lavender, yellow/gold and plum/burgundy.

Ripe Peach is from the coral family and is a striking shade that gives your cheeks a sweet pop of colour. The texture is super blendable and leaves a subtle glow. The shimmer isn't over the top either so you don't have to worry about appearing too shiny.

Top swatch: blended, Bottom swatch: not blended

Beauté Cosmetics Liqui-Gel Stains in Neon: Memories of neon bring me back the garish 80's but Beauté's version is anything but! The neon orange may look shocking in the tube, but once its blended you will adore the coral-pink glow it leaves behind. These stains have some serious staining power too - you have about 12 seconds before it sets so I suggest dabbing a little at a time (if you don't want it to stain your fingers blend with a blush brush or sponge). You won't have to worry about this blush fading throughout the day.

Bonus: you can use this on the lips as well! The gel texture cushions your lips and works best when your lips are dry. However, if you have chapped-skin the stain will only enhance it. Moisturize your lips when you start applying your makeup.  By the time you get to your lips, the lip balm will have set into your lips then you can apply the stain.

Benefit Sugarbomb Boxed Powder:  Swirl these four shades of peach, soft plum, shimmering pink and rose together and your cheeks will get a sweet rush of colour - or so they say. I got to test this powder out back in October only I didn't test it on myself. This blush is a sheer peach-pink on fair to medium skinned beauties but on medium-dark skin like moi, it barely shows up. I was so excited when I was sent a sample but disappointed after trying it. However, it works nicely as a highlighter or an all-over powder but I have enough of those!

Lancome Pop 'n Cheeks Blush in Coral Flirt (O My Rose by Aaron de Mey available February 2010):  Love the presentation of this blush - it's like a little piece of art. The peachy-coral shade is very pretty but the gold glittery shimmer is a little too intense for me. Yes, you can apply the colours separately then use the gold as a highlighter but if you're using a proper sized blush brush that just doesn't work. All that bling on the face during the day might cause some to squint so I'd recommend this blush for a fun night out.

Pinks/Berries:

Cargo Blush in Amalfi (available February 2010 in CVS and select indy boutiques): I was a Cargo blush virgin until recently! After I received a sample of Amalfi, I immediately knew why Cargo's blush was a cult classic. First of all, the texture applies like butter and is so pigmented. The jumbo size and the amount of colour pay-off is so worth the price!

Amalfi is a shimmering hot pink which my cheeks are just loving! If you're looking for a neutral pink then this is not your shade. Amalfi is like a baby doll pink with some attitude. For a girly flush, apply on the apples of the cheek but for something more sophisticated apply Amalfi over a bronzer - gorgeous!

Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Cream Blush in Plum: I was completely shocked at how much I would love this blush! I received a sample back in November and its been in heavy rotation ever since. These ultra creamy oil-free blushes not only give you a healthy glow but nourishes your skin with anti-oxidants and anti-aging properties at the same time.

The plum shade is a sophisticated version of a girly flush. When I apply this shade, my skin instantly looks brighter (love using this when I've had a late night). They are super blendable and long-lasting. It doesn't say you can apply on your lips but I do anyways. My lips look plump and soft and it doesn't dry out them out either.

100% Pure Strawberry Gel Cheek Tint: 100% natural, 100% vegan and gluten-free. This is the philosophy behind the all natural vegan line 100% Pure. The colour is derived from antioxidant and vitamin rich fruit.

Upon opening this blush you'll want to squirt it into your mouth but resist the urge! The yummy strawberry scent is delicious and the strawberry-pink shade is even better! The gel applies sheer so you won't over do it but you can definitely layer for more pop. And since it's all natural why not swipe some onto your lips!

Vapour Organic Beauty Aura Multi-Use Blush in Crush 201:  Vapour Organic Beauty is a certified organic line that uses organic mineral pigments to colour their products. Aura Multi-Use Blush can be used on the cheeks, eyes and lips - big fans of multi-tasking products at Makeup Junkie!

Crush is a soft petal pink that reminds me of the first bloom of spring. It applies sheer on the first application but becomes a brighter pink after 2 more applications. The dewy finish was fresh and natural. Love the on-the-go and travel-friendly packaging, perfect for when you're in a rush.

What blushes are you excited to swipe on your cheeks for Spring?
