Makeup 101: Flirty Plum Eyes With Bride-to-Be Erica!

I love that we're going into the second week of October and bridal season is still going strong! Meet Erica, one of my gorgeous brides-to-be! She's a natural beauty with lovely green eyes and long lushes lashes. I instantly wanted to play up her green eyes so we decided to go with a neutral base and plum accents in the crease. Plum, being one of the big trends for Fall, is a perfect palette for this November bride! (Quick shout-out to Naomi for inspiring me to do this post! Thank you!)

Here are the star products:

Skin
Cargo blu_ray High Definition Mattifier Primer (t-zone)
Make Up For Ever HD Primer (rest of face)
Face Atelier Ultra Pro Foundation #2/#3 mixed (all over and under eyes)
YSL Touche Eclat #1 (under eyes)
Make Up For Ever HD Powder
Bailey Cosmetics Foundation Duo in Tan (contour)

Eyes:
CoverFX EyePrep FX
Bobbi Brown Caviar Eye Shadow (brows)
M.A.C. Vanilla and White Frost (brow bone)

the fake lashes were not glued on for the trial which explains why it is falling off the left eye!

1. NARS Rajasthan Duo Eye Shadow ($32 USD):  I love this duo. For this look I only used this metallic almond shade as her lid colour. I also applied this on the lower lash line. Even though we were using plum shades, we still wanted the overall look to be fairly neutral. I have used the metallic almond colour on just about every skin tone and every result is beautiful. I will definitely do another feature using both the shades because the navy-grey is a sexy alternative for a black smokey eye.
2. M.A.C. Sketch Shadow ($17.50) Sketch is an oldie but a goodie! This burgundy-plum shadow with red shimmer is deep and gives the eye a real sultriness to it. I added this shade in the outer crease to middle of the lid and over top of UD 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Crush. This shade was also applied on the lower lash line.
3. Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Crush ($17 USD): I've had a love affair with these eye pencils for a few years. This is actually from last Fall's collection. Crush is a deep plum with teeny silver glitter. I love using cream bases like an eye pencil to bring out the hue of a powder shadow. Plus, it helps enhance the staying power of a powder shadow. Thankfully the glitter does not fall off onto the skin and gives the hint of sparkle appropriate for a grown woman. I also used UD's Zero black liner to line the top lash line. She didn't want a heavy line so I smudged it into her lash line and dipped an angled brush in black shadow to help lock it in.

L'Oreal Black Mascara (bride's own)
4. Quo #803 Lashes Shopper's Drug Mart Brand ($7.99): I adore Quo lashes. I do not love the glue but their line of fake lashes has never disappointed me. There are a variety of styles to choose from and all are made with 100% natural human hair. One of my favourite styles from the line is the #803. The hair is longest at the center and shorter on the sides which makes the eyes really pop. The feathery quality also gives it a flirty quality and looks very natural against her own lashes. Erica already has long lashes but these falsies just enhanced them even more. Tip: I don't always like to add an obvious line with liquid liner to hide the band. Since she doesn't want the liner to look thick, I will use a flat synthetic brush dipped in black liquid liner and smudge it right onto the band of the fake lashes.

Cheeks:
5. Benefit PosieTint Cheek and Lip Stain ($28 USD): Another beauty crush. When it first came out I tried it on in the store and wasn't too impressed. A month ago, one of my bride's asked me to use it on her underneath a powder blush. I fell in love! I finally decided to pick one up and can't get enough of it. I love cheek and lip stains especially since I wear minimal makeup for everyday. I love it on its own or layered underneath a pink or coral-pink blush which is what I did with Erica. It's creamier than the original, Benetint, and gives a true girly flush. On my skin tone, I need about 2 layers on my cheeks and 3 layers on my lips but once it's on it stays on. I applied this first then dusted a translucent powder to set it.

NARS Douceur Blush (dusted over top of PosieTint)
M.A.C. Mineralize Skinfinish in Shimpagne (cheekbones)

Lips:
M.A.C. Dervish Lip Liner (all over)
Beaute Cosmetics Luminous Volume Gloss in Paramour
6. YSL Rouge Volupte Perle Lipstick SPF 15 in Stellar Pink ($34 USD): This bride is a gloss junkie but I think I've made a lipstick convert out of her! Stellar Pink is a soft pink-beige from the Fall collection and is a shade that is "your-lips-but-better". This luxurious, creamy lipstick is packed with pigment but the glossy finish keeps your lips ultra moisturized. It's not a long-lasting lipstick but if you don't mind reapplying you'll love how it just cushions your lips!

What do you think of Erica's bridal look? Have you tried any of these products? Love 'em? Hate 'em? Want 'em?

Most products with the exception of Benetint PosieTint, Quo #803, and M.A.C. Sketch Eye Shadow were sent for editorial consideration.

Makeup 101: Sculpting and Shaping For Everyday

Sculpting and shaping the contours of the face was a technique that was only done for television or print work, but now it is the latest trend in enhancing your natural beauty. There are so many contouring and highlighting products available now in sheer textures that anyone can disguise prominent features on the face and still look natural. For instance, the illusion of a slimmer face or higher cheekbones can all be achieved with the right products and tools.

My model for this look is my gorgeous best friend, Christine, who needed her makeup done for her optician badge. She wanted to stand out in her picture without adding a lot of makeup on since it is for professional use. I decided to go neutral on the eyes but enhance them with false lashes, a pop of colour on the cheeks and lips, and sculpt and highlight her best features. Alright, lets get started!

Tools:
M.A.C. #109 small contour brush, #190 foundation brush, #194 concealer brush, #129 powder/blush brush, #168 large angled contour brush, #217 blending brush, #219 pencil brush, #224 tapered blending brush, #239 eye shading brush

Face:
Christine willingly agreed to let me post a before picture of her. Thanks hun! Only a confident woman would let me do this! lol
  • Prime: I primed her skin with M.A.C.'s Prep + Prime Face Protect SPF 50.
  • Foundation: I evened out her skin tone with mark's Face Xpert Flawless Touch Makeup. It was a new product and she wanted me to try it on her. I used Honey because her body was darker than her face and I wanted to match it up. I was really impressed with the coverage - it's lightweight, medium to full coverage, oil-free, and has a nice creamy texture to it. It comes with a sponge-tip applicator which is okay for dabbing it on the skin but there's too much product on it to blend with. I used M.A.C.'s #190 brush to blend it out.
  • Conceal: She had a few blemishes but I was able to quickly conceal them with my trusted Lise Watier Professional Corrector in Fair. I find applying concealer after foundation prevents you from piling on too much makeup. I used #194 to apply the concealer directly onto any raised blemishes. I blended out the edges with a sponge and applied loose powder over top so the concealer would not budge. I applied powder to the rest of her face to set her foundation.
  • Contour: Next, I decided to contour her face so you could see it against a natural face. I used #109 brush to apply the contour colour. There are many contour and highlighting palettes available which I will list later, but you can use a bronzer with no shimmer or a pressed powder 1 or 2 shades darker than your skin. Powder products are more forgiving than a darker foundation or concealer. I used Benefit's Hoola bronzer to contour her cheeks.
  • I had her smile so I could see exactly where the colour should go. You want to apply most of the colour closer to the hairline and blend to the outer part of her cheek. I ran the #109 brush back and forth along the hollows of the cheek then used #129 brush to blend any harsh lines. The picture above is what it looks like blended. I also shaded the sides of her nose and outer jawline.

  • Highlighting: This is an important element in creating dimensions to the face. I used the #168 brush to apply shimmer to the cheekbones, inner corner of eyes, brow bone, down the nose and above the bow of the lip. You can use a loose or pressed shimmer powder and depending on your skin tone in shades of white, champagne, or peachy-gold. I love to use M.A.C.'s Mineralize Skin Finish in Shimpagne (limited edition). It's a beautiful pearly champage shade and gives the skin a pretty glow.
  • Blush: To give Christine a healthy pop of colour, I decided to use a true pink from Nars called Mata Hari. It looks bold in the compact but goes on the skin sheer so you can build to your desired intensity - a little goes a long way though. Tap of excess colour onto a kleenex or tapping the brush against your hand. I used #129 brush and applied the blush to the apples of the cheek. I used the same brush to blend the contour colour and blush together. Trend alert: pink cheeks will be making a come back come Spring!
  • Brands that have special contour and highlight palettes: M.A.C. Sculpt and Shape Powder, Laura Geller Shade N' Sculpt Baked Contouring Powder with Brush, Stila Face Contouring Trio, and Make Up For Ever Compact Modellers

Eyes:

  • Prime: I prepped her eyes with powder then applied M.A.C.'s Eye Paint in Untitled, with the #239 brush, as a base. There are many primers out there so use what you like best.
  • Base Shadow: I dusted Nars' peachy shade from Key Largo on the lid with the #239 brush and highlighted the brow bone with M.A.C.'s Mineralize Skin Finish in Shimpagne using the #217 brush. I like using #217 under the brow bone because it applies shimmer to the brow bone naturally without looking too shiny and outdated.
  • Colour: I love using bronzey-browns when doing a neutral eye. It gives the eye a bit of warmth and pairs well with different colours. I applied the bronzey hue from Nars' Key Largo Duo Shadow. I used #239 brush to apply the colour all across the lid and into the crease, concentrating the colour close to the lash line, using a patting motion. The colour will go on stronger using this technique. I used my #224 brush to blend any noticeable lines.
  • Liner: Because I wanted this look to be fairly natural I didn't want a strong line. I was also applying fake lashes and didn't want to apply black liner to cover the lashes. I decided to smudge a deep chocolate shadow from Nars called Bengali, close to the lash line with M.A.C.'s #219 brush. I smudged some of the shadow into the outer crease for some dimension. I also smudged liner into her bottom lash line. If you look at the above picture the fake lash line is barely noticeable.
  • Lashes: Christine loves fake lashes (who doesn't??) and wanted to bring out her eyes without heavy colour. Using fake lashes is a great way to add drama to the eye without looking over done. Her lashes were already curled and I decided to forgo the mascara because the faux lashes would be enough. I applied Quo's lashes that look exactly like M.A.C.'s #7 but are half the price. For steps on how to apply lashes refer to step #7 from a previous Makeup 101 by clicking here. I didn't need to blend her natural lash with mascara and only applied mascara to the bottom.
Lips and the final look:
  • She wanted her look to be fun but polished. To keep the look radiant and fresh, I didn't want her lips to be strongly defined. I skipped the lip liner and went straight for a sheer berry pink lipstick from Pink Beauty called Vivi. For a luscious shine, I applied Smashbox's Lip Enhancing Gloss in Spark, also a berry pink shade. Side note: I didn't touch her brows because she doesn't like them to stand out against her blond hair.
Now Christine is looking picture perfect! Sculpting and shaping the face takes practice to get it to look natural. It's not necessary for everyday but it's a great option when you feel like accentuating and hiding certain features. Take a before an after picture to see the difference. You'll be surprised at how different you can look. I hope these suggestions helped and if you have any questions please feel free to leave a comment or email me. I'd love to hear what you think and if anyone uses contouring products on a regular bases. If there is a look or technique you'd like me to feature in my Makeup 101 posts email them to me! :) I'll be doing a new Makeup 101 every month so stay tuned!

Makeup 101: 1940's Glam My Way

I had the pleasure of doing makeup for the beautiful bride Christine over the summer and I was soo excited when she decided to do the 1940's glam look which is so big for Fall right now. I've done a few how-to's on this Fall beauty trend but this time I wanted to share the products and techniques I used to achieve this look. She was such an inspiration because she truly reflected the glam woman of the 1940's from hair, to makeup, to dress (which was absolutely stunning on her), to shoes, to accessories. Alright, let's get started and get you glammed up!

1. Base: I started with a primer to create a smooth base for her foundation. I let it set for 5 minutes before applying her foundation. I used a silicone-based foundation and evened out her skin tone where needed with a foundation brush. I didn't want the foundation to look too heavy because I wanted her to appear fresh and radiant. I applied a creamy concealer around the nose and under the eyes with a concealer brush. I set the foundation with a dusting of blotting powder, making sure that her lids were well-powdered.

Products: M.A.C. Prep+Prime Face Protect SPF 50, Face Atelier Ultra Foundation, M.A.C. Foundation brush #190, Lise Watier Professional Correctors, YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touch (courtesy of the bride which I'm dying to get!), M.A.C. Concealer brush #194, M.A.C. Blot Powder/Pressed

2. Eyes: I like to fill the brows in first because it frames the eye and helps me determine the look I want to achieve that will compliment the eye shape. I used a matte eyeshadow with a brow brush to fill in her brows and chose a reddish-brown colour to match her beautiful auburn hair. I blended the colour with a mascara brush to make it more natural and used a clear brow gel to set it.

Before applying any shadow I used a base to prime the lids so that the shadows would blend nicely and last longer. I highlighted the brow bone, lower lash line and inner corner of the eyes with a shimmery champagne shadow with a dense blending shadow brush. I shaded the lid with a matte vanilla shadow with a flat brush and defined the crease with a matte stone and dark brown shadow mixed together blending back and forth until there were no harsh lines. To make the eyes pop a bit, I applied the shimmery champagne shadow to the center of the lids. I used a water-resistant liquid liner in black lining the inner to outer lash line with a flat synthetic liner brush and skipped winging it out because her lid drooped downwards. I curled the lashes and applied a coat of water-proof mascara. To make those lashes flutter I added a pair of false lashes.

Products: M.A.C. Eye Shadow Folie (brows), M.A.C. Small Angled Brow Brush #208, M.A.C. Lash Brush #204, M.A.C. Clear Brow Set, M.A.C. Eye Paint Untitled (primer), M.A.C. Eye Shadow Shroom (highlighter), M.A.C. Blending Brush #217, M.A.C. Eye Shadow Vanilla (lid), M.A.C. Eye Shading Brush #239, M.A.C. Eye Shadow Charcoal Brown (crease), M.A.C. Eye Shadow Brun (crease), M.A.C. LiquidLast Liner Point Black, M.A.C. Flat Definer Brush #212, Shu Uemura Eye Lash Curler, L'oreal Voluminous Water-proof Mascara in Black, Quo Cosmetics Lashes #801

Cheeks: I contoured her cheeks with a matte bronzer and a neutral blush using a contour blush brush. I gave her cheeks a beautiful glow using a soft pink blush and added a highlighter to the cheekbones.

Products: Benefit Hoola Bronzer, M.A.C. Powder Blush Harmony, M.A.C. Small Contour Brush #109, Benefit Dandelion , M.A.C. Limited Edition Mineralize Skinfinish Shimpagne (highlighter)

Lips: Red lips perfectly applied can be a bit tricky. I applied a lip balm first because the last thing you want is chapped lips. To prevent the colour from bleeding or feathering I applied a primer to the lips and let it set in for a few minutes. I lined and filled in the lips with a creamy lip pencil. I applied a semi-matte lipstick in a true blue red and added a opalescent gloss to the center of the lips. To fix mistakes, I dipped my concealer brush in concealer and cleaned up the edges. Also, when applying gloss to red lips only apply to the center of the bottom lip staying away from the outer part to prevent bleeding.

Products: Murad Soothing Lip Therapy, Benefit Lip Plump (primer), M.A.C. Cremestick Liner Red Enriched, M.A.C. Lipstick M.A.C. Red, M.A.C. Lustreglass Luminary

This look can work on everyone and can be done many ways using different products. This is just my take on the '40's glam look. There is a fabulous red lipstick for every woman so keep searching until you find the right one. Happy shopping!

Makeup 101: How To Make Fall Beauty Trends Work For You

Beauty trends are just that - trends. Not every trend will suit everyone but you can find ways to make it work for your skin tone and face shape. This Fall makeup trends go from one extreme to the next; uber glam girl, sultry siren, a bit pop-art, to naturally radiant. There's bound to be a trend that will tickle your fancy. Here are some tips to make the fall beauty trends work for you.

1. Big Beautiful Brows: The picture above is an extreme version of a full brow. If you've got a great full brow and shape why not show it off? Full brows frame the face nicely and thinning brows can age you. The look is all about well-defined brows with a clean face. There's just a hint of colour on the eyes, lips, and cheeks. The brows on the model are a lot darker than her natural hair colour. You want to choose a brow shade close to your natural hair colour. I recommend going either exactly the same shade or one shade lighter. Going darker tends to look unnatural and too harsh against your skin. I prefer to use a brow powder with an angled brush to fill in brows but a pencil works just as well too. Use short wispy strokes to mimic your natural brow hair. Then take a eyebrow brush one that looks like a mascara wand to blend the brow colour in with your brow. Tame unruly ends with a clear brow gel. Finish off with natural colours on the eyes, lips and cheeks for a fresh clean look.

2. Smoldering Eyes: The smokier the better this Fall. The smoky eye has evolved over the years and has been done in every shape, every finish, and every colour. This season, there's nothing subtle about the smoky eye. Eyes are dark and moody while the rest of the face is complimented in pale natural hues. Popular colours this season are matte charcoal greys, navy and silver blues, royal and eggplant purples. All these colours suit all skin tones so take your pick. For some guidelines to creating a smoky eye visit my Makeup 101: Creating the Perfect Smoky Eye. Remember the key to a great smoky eye is to have the right tools and blend, blend, blend!

3. Graphic Eye Liner: The little black liner comes in every shape and size and even colours this season. Cat eyes are once again popular and making me purrr. Winging out the liner gives the illusion of bigger eyes and looks tres sexy. Now, Cleopatra eyes and neon pink liner winged out would probably not go over well in an office environment. I recommend using charcoal greys, navy's, or deep purples to line the eyes. They are work-appropriate colours and are definitely in keeping with the trends. Instead of winging your liner out to the edge of your brow, wing it out slightly past your eye meeting at or just before your outer crease. Pull your temple taut and slightly up to help accentuate the liner. I like to use an angled brush for precision and control. For an edgier look, line the bottom lash line as well. Play around with different shapes until you're happy with one that suits your eyes. You can compliment lined eyes with a smoky eye or go more classic with natural tones on the eyes making the liner the focus. Adding fake lashes is also fun and amps up the prrr factor. If you're daring enough and love colour, line the eyes in royal blues and bright purples.

Makeup Junkie faves: MAC's Fluidline in Royal Wink and Waveline and MAC's Liquidlast Liner in Point Black, Electrolady, and Inky

4. Fresh Face: For those of you that prefer a minimalistic approach to makeup (or you just don't have time!) then you're in luck for Fall. Eyes, lips, and cheeks are all in natural hues of beige, stone, and peach. Skin has a semi-matte finish and is luminous in all the right places: cheekbones, inner corner of eyes, and above the brow bone. Try foundations that have a bit more coverage but still have a natural finish to the skin. I like silicone-based foundations because it floats on top of the skin rather than settling into fine lines and pores. Mix semi-matte and shimmery shadows together to give the eye some dimension. Colours on the cheeks are more luminous than shimmery and have a subtle sheen. Lips are either matte or creamy rather than shiny. Brows are also shaped and filled in. This look is polished and looks beautiful on anyone.

*When choosing a nude lip colour for darker skin tones stay away from shades that look chalky on your lips. Go for warmer or deeper browns or shades of caramel tones.

Makeup Junkie faves: Face Atelier Foundation, Bare Escentuals bareMinerals SPF 15 Foundation, Giorgio Armani Matte Silk Foundation, Cargo Eye Shadow Palette - Ibiza, Nars' Duo Eye Shadow in Key Largo, Smashbox Decadence Blush in Ecstasy, Nars' Multiple Stick in Copacabana (highlighting), Smashbox Decadence Photo Finish Lip Luxe, Smashbox Lip Enhancing Gloss in Pixel

5. Glam Girl: Glam girls like to go all out. Everything from head-to-toe is polished to perfection almost effortlessly. Skin is flawless and has a velvety matte texture. Brows are strong and defined. Lashes are flirty and lush. Cheekbones are contoured. A swish of black liquid liner is all that's needed to draw attention to the eyes with a bit of contouring in the crease. Lips are defined in a matte rich shade of red. Adding false lashes to this look is a must. Visit Step #7 of my Makeup 101: Creating the Perfect Smoky Eye for how to apply false lashes. The key to this look is well-defined lips. Using a lip liner is a must for this look to prevent feathering and bleeding of your lipstick. Choose a liner that is similar to your lipstick colour. Apply a primer to the lips to fill in fine lines and to give your colour a long-lasting effect. Line the lips starting at the bow of your top lip which is the 'v' shape. Start on one side working the line to the outer part using short strokes. Repeat the step on the other side. Lining your lips inner to outer instead of outer to inner gives a more accurate shape. Next line the bottom lip and fill in the entire lip with the liner. Hold the liner on a slant instead of a point for more control. Use a lip brush to apply your lip colour for precise application and to ensure your colour is well-blended. If you make a mistake, dip your concealer brush or pointed Q-tip into a bit of concealer or foundation and blend over top any messy edges. This is a timeless look that is gorgeous on every woman. There's a red lipstick for every skin tone - try every one until you find the perfect match! Remember to reference what works with your skin's undertone.

Makeup Junkie faves: Quo lashes (found at Shoppers Drug Mart), MAC Lipstick in Diva and Viva Glam, MAC's Lip Pencil in Burgundy and Cremestick Liner in Red Enriched, MAC's #318 Retractable Lip Brush

The fun thing about makeup is that you don't have to be stuck with one look so change it up this season. A lot of the clothes this season are in lovely shades of grey so play up your face with a smoky eye or a bright lip. Remember that you wear the makeup - don't let the makeup wear you! ;)

Beauty Reviews: Drugstore Brands vs. High End Brands

I've been asked a few times why I rarely recommend or review any drugstore brand cosmetics. I'll be honest - as a make-up artist I'm used to sticking with high end brands but that doesn't mean I think less of drugstore cosmetics. The drugstore is where I began my love affair with make-up and I still continue to buy a mascara or two here and there. Brands like Revlon, L'oreal, Maybelline, and Max Factor have gone above and beyond changing their formulations and packaging to match those of their higher end competitors.
